Common reasons leaf blowers lose performance and power

If your leaf blower has gone from ‘mini tornado’ to ‘hamster sigh’, don’t worry, it’s usually not being dramatic for attention. A leaf blower losing power is normally short of one of three things: clean air, good fuel, or a strong spark. Sometimes it is also being choked by debris, a blocked exhaust, or a sulky carburettor.

The good news is that many of the common checks are simple, safe, and well within homeowner territory. A few take seconds, some need a bit of cleaning, and others are better left to a workshop, especially if your blower is under warranty or has started cutting out, overheating, or refusing to start.

Before poking about, switch the machine off, let it cool, remove the battery on cordless models, or disconnect the spark plug lead on petrol models if you are doing anything near moving parts. That little safety pause is less exciting than a new carburettor, granted, but much better for your fingers.

Start with the simple symptoms

Power loss can show up in a few different ways: struggling under load, bogging down when you squeeze the trigger, running unevenly, cutting out when warm, or the airflow simply feeling weaker than it used to.

If you can describe what it is doing, you are halfway to finding the culprit. Our technician once spent five minutes diagnosing a “serious airflow fault” before noticing a crisp packet wedged in the tube. In his defence, it was a very determined crisp packet.

1. Clogged or dirty air filter

Petrol leaf blowers need a steady flow of clean air to mix with fuel. If the air filter is clogged with dust, pollen, grass clippings, or general garden fluff, the engine cannot breathe properly. Imagine trying to jog up Caerphilly Mountain while breathing through a tea towel. That is roughly the vibe.

A dirty air filter often causes poor acceleration, bogging down on the throttle, rough running, or excessive smoke. The blower may start, but feel lazy and underpowered.

To check it, remove the air filter cover and inspect the filter. Foam filters may look dark, oily, or packed with debris. Paper filters may look dusty or blocked. If the filter is torn, soaked in fuel, or crumbling, it needs replacing rather than cleaning.

For a quick DIY fix, tap out loose dust gently, or wash a foam filter in warm soapy water, dry it fully, then lightly oil it if the manufacturer recommends it. Never refit a wet filter, and do not run the blower with no filter fitted, as that lets dirt straight into the engine.

If the filter keeps getting soaked with fuel, or the machine runs badly even with a clean one fitted, it is worth getting it checked professionally.

2. Old or incorrect fuel, or a bad 2-stroke mix

Fuel causes a surprising number of blower tantrums. Petrol goes stale over time, especially when stored in a can or left in the tank for months. As it degrades, it becomes harder to ignite and can leave sticky deposits inside the carburettor.

Most handheld petrol leaf blowers use a 2-stroke engine, which means petrol must be mixed with the correct amount of 2-stroke oil. Too little oil can damage the engine. Too much can cause smoke, plug fouling, and poor running. Either way, the blower is unlikely to be at its breezy best. Sorry, that pun just blew in.

Signs of fuel trouble include difficult starting, poor throttle response, smoky exhaust, or a machine that ran fine last autumn but is now behaving like it has forgotten its job.

If you suspect old fuel, drain the tank safely and refill with fresh, correctly mixed fuel, using the ratio specified for your machine rather than guessing. Label the can clearly, especially if you have other petrol tools using different mixes.

If fresh fuel does not solve it and the blower still surges, stalls, or will not run without choke, old fuel may already have gummed up the carburettor, and cleaning or adjustment may be needed. 3. Blocked exhaust or clogged spark arrestor

Your blower needs to get exhaust gases out as well as air and fuel in. If the exhaust outlet, muffler, or spark arrestor screen becomes clogged with carbon, the engine can feel strangled, lose power, run hot, or fail to rev properly. This is more common on machines run on an overly oily mix or not serviced in a while.

Once the machine is fully cool, inspect the exhaust outlet for obvious carbon build-up. Some models have a small spark arrestor screen that can be removed and cleaned carefully, but avoid jabbing sharp objects into the exhaust port.

If the muffler is heavily carboned up, the machine has been overheating, or fixings are seized, this is workshop territory. Exhaust parts get hot, delicate, and occasionally argumentative.

4. Worn, fouled, or badly gapped spark plug

The spark plug ignites the fuel and air mixture. If it is worn, oily, sooty, or set to the wrong gap, the spark can become weak or inconsistent, causing misfiring, rough running, hard starting, and power loss.

Remove the plug with the correct spanner and check the tip. A healthy plug is usually light tan or greyish. A black, sooty plug points to too much fuel or oil in the mix, or a blocked air filter. An oily plug may mean the engine has flooded, and a white, blistered plug can suggest overheating or a lean-running engine.

If the plug is old or fouled, replacement is often the simplest DIY fix. Use the correct plug type, set the gap to spec if required, and do not overtighten it when refitting. Spark plugs like to be snug, not treated like a wheel nut on a lorry.

If a new plug quickly fouls again, it is probably a symptom rather than the root cause, and the fuel mixture, carburettor, or air filter likely need attention too.

5. Blocked air intake or blower tube

Sometimes the engine is fine, but the blower simply cannot move air properly. Leaves, twigs, grass clippings, or damp debris can block the air intake or lodge in the tube. It is the garden machinery equivalent of putting your thumb over a straw and wondering why your milkshake has vanished.

You may notice reduced airflow even though the engine sounds fairly normal, or extra vibration if debris is caught near the fan area. Switch the blower off, let everything stop fully, and check inside the tube, nozzle, and intake grille, clearing loose debris by hand or with a soft brush. Never put fingers near the fan area unless the machine is completely safe and isolated from power.

On cordless blowers, also check the battery is properly seated and the intake vents are clear, as a blocked vent can make the tool heat up and lose output.

This is usually a quick DIY fix. If the fan has been damaged or you hear scraping or rattling after clearing the blockage, stop using it and have it inspected.

6. Carburettor issues: gumming up or incorrect adjustment

The carburettor controls the mix of fuel and air going into the engine. When it is clean and correctly adjusted, the blower starts, idles, and runs at full power smoothly. When it is gummed up or out of adjustment, performance can fall off quickly, usually thanks to old fuel leaving varnish-like deposits in the tiny internal passages.

The result can be surging, stalling, bogging under throttle, needing choke to keep running, or refusing to idle. Some petrol blowers have adjustment screws, but this is where DIY gets a bit dicey: a small turn the wrong way can make the engine run too lean, risking damage, or too rich, causing smoke and poor power.

If you have fitted fresh fuel, checked the air filter and spark plug, and cleared the tubes, and the blower still will not run properly, the carburettor is a likely suspect. That is a good moment to book it in for a service, especially if the blower is used heavily or has been stored for a long spell with fuel in it.

A sensible order for troubleshooting

If you want a practical order, start with the things that cost the least time and fuss: check the tube and intake for blockages, inspect or clean the air filter, drain and refresh old fuel, check the spark plug, then look for exhaust blockage before considering the carburettor. Overheating along the way is usually a symptom of one of the above rather than a fault in its own right, so if the casing feels unusually hot or the engine fades as it warms up, stop and work through the list before running it again.

Keep your blower blowing strongly

A leaf blower that has lost power is usually not beyond saving. In many cases, it is a dirty filter, stale fuel, blocked tube, tired spark plug, clogged exhaust, or carburettor that needs attention. A little regular maintenance goes a long way, especially before and after the busy leaf season.
